The French Guilds

The Rubaniers (ribbon makers), Dorelotiers (mid 14th century) (workers in gold and silver, then the Boutonniers were early French Guilds. Later these were absorbed into the Guild of Passementieres. In the mid 16th century under Charles X of France a charter was issued "only a member of the Guild of Passementieres were permitted to work in gold, silver and silk referred to then as 'good and loyal materials'. The mixing of baser threads such as wool, cotton etc was not permitted.
